3 Storey House Design in Koswatte, Battaramulla

The house was to be designed on a sloping land and the car porch has designed at the basement level separated by floor height retaining wall. The retaining wall was designed as a propped cantilever wall and hence the thicknesses could be maintained in an economical level.
The structural design was done by Eng.Isuru S. Amarasena. 225mmx225mm columns and 300mmx300mm columns were used appropriately transfer the axial loads and also to withstand the induced bending moments in the vertical members. A the project was initiated during the crisis period, due to unavailability and the cost rise of the materials, two options were proposed for the retaining wall design. A rubble retaining wall and a propped cantilever one, so that the client could decide the appropriate wall type by considering the timely factors at the moment.

Almost all the slab panels could be designed with a 125mm thickness and with T10 reinforcement bars in 200mm centers. The design was carried out not using the thumb rules, but with a proper structural modelling and analyzing part. So that, we were able to provide the most suitable economical design. It means the larger sizes only for actually required positions and economical smaller sizes and reinforcement for the other places. This concept may have benefitted to the client in the cost perspectives. The project is still in the construction stage.

Elegant House Design of a University Lecturer, in a green environment at Homagama.

This house is to be built in a spacious green environment at Homagama. The client is a University lecturer as well as a Civil Engineer. Though he is a Civil Engineer, as he is currently engaged in academic work in the transportation engineering, he handed the structural design par to Eng.Isuru S. Amarasena. We have successfully completed the structural design phase at the moment. The Architectural Design was done by "MAARA" led by Architect Uditha Makewita. Actually it is an elegant design and very much similar to a modern hotel.
In the structural design, a certain number of pad foundation and rubble work is proposed along with smaller tie beams as the soil condition was very stiff and hard. The sill levels are maintained aligned all over the house and  structural and stiffener and tie beams were utilized effectively and economically. In order to design the elegant roof, steel columns were proposed to bolted to the concrete beds on the walls and column heads. Transverse steel beams are proposed on the steel columns and Steel Lipped Channels were used to support the roof sheeting. Wooden jacketing will cover the things and increased the architecturally rick look.

Structural design of a Retaining Wall at Kandana.

Around 5 feet height of soil was to be retained and a previously built close construction was appeared on the upper bank. 1 feet by 9 inches sized reinforced concrete columns were proposed in 10 feet intervals and a capping beam was proposed on top and a tie beam in the bottom. Transverse lateral soil loads were accumulated by the restrained slabs and it was transferred to the beams and the columns and finally to the column footings and to the earth down bank. A strong stiff soil was appeared on the down bank and hence, it was ok to use economical footing sizes.
Weep holes were proposed to dissipate the excessive water pressure. In the present, the construction is finished and functioning well.
